Step Up Made Easy

Step Up, in plain English.

The paperwork can feel like alphabet soup. Here's what it actually means — and how your funds reach us.

How the money works

Your scholarship funds sit in your EMA account — Step Up's online system. You reserve funds to an approved provider like KCE, we bill Step Up directly, and you pay nothing out of pocket with no reimbursement forms to file.

Reserve your funds in six steps

  1. Log in to your EMA account.
  2. From your Dashboard, open the Marketplace.
  3. Click “Find Providers.”
  4. Search for KingCretot Experience.
  5. Choose the lesson or package we agreed on.
  6. Reserve your funds — that's it. We deliver the lessons and handle the invoice.

Your Marketplace opens about a week after your scholarship is funded, once tuition and fees are covered.

Scholarship Types

Which scholarships does KCE accept?

KCE is approved to accept the following Step Up For Students scholarship programs. Eligibility is determined by Step Up — not by KCE.

PEP (Personalized Education Program)

Florida's scholarship for K–12 students who are not enrolled full-time in public or private school — including homeschool families. Provides funds for tutoring, instructional materials, and customized educational support.

FTC/FES-EO (Educational Options)

Florida's universal-eligibility scholarship for K-12 educational expenses — formerly the Florida Tax Credit (FTC) Scholarship, which absorbed the Hope Scholarship in 2024. Open to all Florida K-12 students, with income-based priority. Funds can be used for approved tutoring and instructional services.

FES-UA (Unique Abilities)

For students with disabilities or unique learning needs who qualify under Florida's expanded eligibility criteria. Can be used for both private school and homeschool students receiving specialized instructional support.

Common Questions

Frequently asked.

Do I pay anything out of pocket for KCE tutoring?

For families with an active Step Up scholarship — PEP, FTC/FES-EO, or FES-UA — and sufficient remaining funds, KCE's instructional services are paid through your scholarship balance — not out of pocket. Step Up determines your annual scholarship amount and what portion can be applied to tutoring. We recommend checking your fund balance before each new package.

How long does Step Up approval take?

Approval timelines are set by Step Up For Students, not by KCE. Most families receive a decision within several weeks of submitting a complete application, but timing varies by scholarship type and time of year. For current processing timelines, check directly with Step Up.

Can I use Step Up funds for any KCE program?

Step Up funds can typically be used for instructional services that align with your child's educational needs — K–12 academic tutoring, test preparation, homeschool support, and subject-specific help. Step Up sets the rules on allowable uses, so we recommend confirming with them before purchasing if you have questions about a specific service.

What if my scholarship funds run out mid-year?

If your scholarship balance is depleted before the school year ends, families have a few options: pause services until the next scholarship cycle, continue at KCE's published rates as a private-pay family, or contact Step Up about your funding options. We'll work with you to find an approach that supports your child's continued learning.

Can I switch from another Step Up provider to KCE?

Yes. Step Up allows families to choose and change approved providers throughout the year. To switch to KCE, you'd authorize KCE as a provider through your Step Up account and complete our intake form. We're glad to help families exploring a different fit.
